Abstract

Oppgaven tar for seg GSM teknologien i Norge, i fra den ble innført i 1993 og ut tiåret. Problemstillingen i oppgaven er "Hvordan påvirket innføringen av GSM teknologien telefonbransjen fra den kom i 1993 og ut tiåret, og hvordan ble infrastrukturen utviklet? Dette forskningsspørsmålet hadde blitt forsket litt på på internasjonal basis, men var et forskningshull på landsbasis i Norge. Målet med oppgaven er å svare på forskningspørsmålet på en objektiv måte med hjelp av gamle avisartikler fra perioden som blir studert.

Oppgaven argumenter for at innføringen av GSM påvirket telefonbransjen i stor grad, og på mange ulike måter. GSM førte ikke med det første til lavere abonnementspriser. GSM førte til en enorm konkurranse i telefonbransjen, der økonomi, markedsandel, sikkerhet og konkurranse mellom Netcom og Telenor ble de store drivkreftene i bransjen. GSM førte til at bransjen lettere kunne få bukt med kriminalitet, siden stjålne telefoner kunne sperres. Innføringen av GSM førte også til en debatt om personvern i telefonbransjen på grunn av nummervisningsfunksjonen. Mulighet til å ringe rundt i hele Europa og tekstmeldinger var nye teknologier som appellerte til mange og førte til en enorm kundevekst i telefonbransjen. GSM førte også til at telefoner ble mye billigere og dermed mer tilgjengelig for folk flest. Meningene rundt hvordan infrastrukturen ble utviklet var delt. Mange utenfor byene var misfornøyde med GSM dekningen i midten av tiåret, og i 1999 var det fortsatt kilder som tyder på at problemet vedvarte. Telefonbransjen fokuserte alltid på hvor de allerede hadde bygget ut og de store flotte planene som var lagt. De utenfor byene ble i tidsperioden oppgaven tar for seg glemt.

This assignment deals with GSM technology in Norway, from the time it was introduced in 1993 until the end of the decade. The research question in this assignement is "How did the introduction of GSM technology affect the telephone industry from its introduction in 1993 and until the end of the decade, and how was the infrastructure developed? This research question has been researched a little on an international basis, however, it was a research gap on a national basis in Norway. The aim of the thesis is to answer the research question in an objective way with the help of old newspaper articles from the period being studied.

This paper argues that the introduction of GSM affected the telephone industry to a great extent, and in many different ways. GSM did not initially lead to lower subscription prices. GSM led to enormous competition in the telephone industry, where economy, market share, security and competition between Netcom and Telenor became the major driving forces in the industry. GSM made it easier for the industry to overcome crime, since stolen phones could be blocked. The introduction of GSM also led to a debate about privacy in the telephone industry due to the number display function. The ability to make calls throughout Europe and text messages were new technologies that appealed to many and led to enormous customer growth in the telephone industry. GSM also led to phones becoming much cheaper and thus more accessible to most people. Opinions about how the infrastructure was developed were divided. Many people outside the cities were dissatisfied with GSM coverage in the middle of the decade, and in 1999 there were still sources indicating that the problem persisted. The telephone industry always focused on where they had already built infrastructure and the big, great plans that had been laid. People living outside the cities were forgotten during the time period covered by the thesis.
