Kirkenes reaksjon og håndtering av spanskesyken i USA

Abstract

Under spanskesyken, 1918-1918, innførte de lokale myndighetene i USA tiltak for å forsøke å stanse spredningen av spanskesyken. Ett av disse tiltakene var at kirker måtte holde stengt i viss perioder. Hvordan reagert disse kirkene på at de ikke fikk holde gudstjenester i en slik krisetid? Hvordan håndterte de ellers spanskesyken? Konklusjonen er at de fleste kirkene i USA annerkjente behovet for å stenge kirkene, men som følge av forskjellsbehandling kritiserte de myndighetene for å prioritere økonomi fremfor åndelig veiledning. Kirken håndterte spanskesyken gjennom åndelig veiledning av sine kirkegjengere, å spre helsemyndighetenes råd angående hygiene, og bistod med frivillig arbeid der det trengtes mest.

During the great influenza, 1918-1918, the local authorities in the United States introduced measures to try to stop the spread of the influenza. One of these measures was that churches had to remain closed for certain periods. How did these churches react to the fact that they were not allowed to hold services in such a time of crisis? How else did they deal with the great influenza? The conclusion is that most of the churches in the USA recognized the need to close the churches, but as a result of discrimination they criticized the authorities for prioritizing finances over spiritual guidance. The church dealt with the great influenza through spiritual guidance of its churchgoers, spreading the health authorities' advice regarding hygiene, and assisted with voluntary work where it was most needed.
