Historically, fairytales have been written to educate people about acceptable behavior and morals and to make them understand how to behave. Traditionally fairytales were used to shape children into morally good adults, by using symbolics like animals, and supernatural beings, like witches, werewolves and fairies. The fairytales reflect the norms, morals, and themes of their time. The Bloody Chamber and other stories by Angela Carter is a collection of stories based on classic fairytales. It is important to point out that they are new stories and not re-tellings. The book consists of ten stories, all within the same framework. The stories share a lot of the same symbolism and are based around the same narrative technique. I have decided to focus on the titular story, even though I acknowledge the similarities and on some occasions draw examples from the other stories in the book. This thesis aims to understand the role of affect theory and its influence on the cultural and social environment. How we as people interpret the information we retain through emotional and social interactions. I will do this by first describing the mechanisms of the difference between emotion and affect, as well as explaining the differences between the two. In this thesis, I aim to focus on some of the most powerful symbols and her use of color. I aim to show how the interpretation of symbolism has on one side evolved since the debut of the book, and on the other side it holds a timeless, and recognizable theme. I will focus on the affective symbolism in the story to show how Angela Carter used symbolism to guide her readers into certain states of mind. Symbols are used to create affect through literature and other media. In doing this I aim to show how the interpretation of symbolism has on one side evolved since the debut of the book, and on the other side it holds a timeless, and recognizable theme.
