Fremstillingen av tre sagakvinner i Snorre Sturlassons Heimskringla.

Abstract

Denne bacheloroppgaven utforsker kvinners politiske rolle i vikingtiden gjennom analysen av to kongesagaer i Heimskringla, Harald Hårfagre og Halvdan Svarte, skrevet av Snorre Sturlasson. Fokuset ligger på tre kvinner: Åsa Haraldsdottir, Gyda Eiriksdottir og Ragnild Sigurdsdottir, og Snorres fremstilling i forhold til det politiske samfunnslivet i Norge på 800-tallet. Analyse av sagaene, støttet av arkeologiske funn og andre historiske kilder, vil gi innsikt i kvinners posisjon i det politiske maktspillet i denne perioden. Videre vil oppgaven drøfte kvinner i historiefaglige kilder og reflektere over hvilke innsikter de gir om kvinnenes liv og virke på 800-tallet i Norge. Oppgaven vil struktureres med en analyse av de valgte kvinnene, etterfulgt av en bredere drøfting av de eventuelle funnene og videre teoretiske betraktninger om både hvordan vi forsker på kjønnshistorie i dag.

This bachelor thesis explores the political role of woman in the Viking Age through the analysis of two royal sagas in Heimskringla, Harald Fairhair and Halftan the Black, written by Snorre Sturlasson. The focus is on three women: Åsa Haraldsdottir, Gyda Eiriksdottir and Ragnild Sigurdsdottir, and Snorre’s presentation in relation to the political social life in Norway in the 8th century. Analysis of the sagas, supported by archeological finds and other historical sources will provide insight into woman’s positions in the political power play in this period. Furthermore, the thesis will discuss the reliability of the royal sagas as historical sources and reflect on what insights they provide about woman’s lives and work in the 8th century Norway. The assignment will be structured with an analysis of the selected woman, followed by a broader discussion of possible findings and further theoretical considerations about how we research gender history today.
