Postkoloniale stemmer: Tidligere koloniers reaksjoner på dronning Elizabeth IIs dødsfall

Abstract

Masteravhandlingen undersøker hvordan aktører i Kenya og Nigeria som er kritiske til det britiske imperiet, stiller seg til dronning Elizabeth IIs dødsfall høsten 2022. Problemstillingen lyder: "Hvordan påvirker dronning Elizabeth IIs dødsfall minnekulturen i Kenya og Nigeria?". Oppgaven tar utgangspunkt i debattene som utartet seg i Kenya og Nigeria. De blir analysert med formål om å finne ut av hvilken fortid og hvilke minner aktørene benytter seg av i kjølvannet av dødsfallet. Videre blir funksjonen til disse referansene analysert for å finne ut av hvilken hensikt minne- og fortidsreferansene har.

Oppgaven er en casestudie og problemstillingen besvares ved å gjennomføre en konvensjonell innholdsanalyse. I forkant av analysen blir det teoretiske- og metodiske rammeverket redegjort for. Relevante teorier og begrep fra minnestunder benyttes for å forstå og kaste lys over måten aktørene benytter seg av fortidsreferanser og minner. Empirien består av et utvalg artikler fra ulike mediehus, skrevet av alt fra professorer, journalister, forfattere og vanlige folk.

En hypotese for oppgaven er at flere aktører har problem med å skille personen Elizabeth fra hennes kongelige forpliktelser og rolle som øverste leder av det britiske imperiet. Funn fra analysen tilsier at dronning Elizabeth IIs dualistiske representasjon i det kollektive og kulturelle minnet avdekker en interessant spenning og skaper et paradoks om hvordan dronningen blir representert og husket i det kollektive minnet. Teorien om multidireksjonelle minner gir innsikt i hvorfor dette paradokset er problematisk. Gjennom Paul Ricoeurs tilnærming til historisk kunnskap som epistemologi og fenomenologi skapes det videre innsikt i utfordringene aktørene i Kenya og Nigeria opplever, og kan bidra til en større anerkjennelse av postkoloniale stemmers betydning i dagens verden.

This master thesis explores how actors in Kenya and Nigeria who are critical of the British Empire respond to the death of Queen Elizabeth II in the autumn of 2022. The research question is: "How does the death of Queen Elizabeth II affect the memory culture in Kenya and Nigeria?". The thesis is based on the debates that unfolded in Kenya and Nigeria. They are analyzed to determine which past and memories is used to draw on in the aftermath of the death. Furthermore, the function of these references is analyzed to determine the purpose of memory and historical references.

The thesis is a case study, and the research question is answered by conducting a conventional content analysis. Prior to the analysis, the theoretical and methodological framework is outlined. Relevant theories and concepts from memory studies are used to understand and shed light on how the people utilize historical references and memories. The empirical data consists of a selection of articles from various media outlets, written by professors, journalists, authors, and ordinary people.

A hypothesis for the thesis is that several post-colonial actors struggle to separate the person Elizabeth from her royal duties and role as the supreme leader of the British Empire. Findings from the analysis suggest that Queen Elizabeth II's dualistic representation within the collective and cultural memory reveals an interesting tension that creates a paradox regarding how the queen is represented and remembered in the collective memory. The theory of multidirectional memory provides insight into why this paradox is problematic. Furthermore, through Paul Ricoeur's approach to historical knowledge as epistemology and phenomenology, deeper insight is gained into the challenges experienced by actors in Kenya and Nigeria, which can contribute to a greater recognition of the significance of postcolonial voices in today's world.
