We have through open conversations with one of the dominant hotel chains in Norway analyzed their short term future plans related to automating their front desk services - Focusing on the process of check-in and check-out. This is part of the digital transformation currently happening in the hotel industry. In this thesis we present the two most relevant alternatives for such use, that being kiosk stations and mobile applications. It turns out that the alternative of kiosks is not included in the chain’s future plans at all, the app however is the main focus area. There are several reasons for this. The advantages of the app versus the kiosks are related to the total cost and the maintenance of physical stations. The app is developed as a platform for booking, newsletters, chatting with the reception and unlocking the hotel room doors, in addition to checking-in and -out. The hotel chain may therefore to a greater extent challenge the marked shares of online third-party channels (OTAs) in the booking process. If the hotels offer an effective app for booking their access to customer data naturally improves too. When will the market however be ready for high scale usage of an hotel app? It is the consumers, therefore the market itself, that decides when the market is in fact ready. We now know factors that are important regards culture, technological user skills of the guests’, their perceived usefulness of the app and its perceived ease of use.By upscaling digital self service technologies what will happen to the local work positions at the hotels? The chain clearly expresses how they will always prioritize people over digital functions. The receptionists’ time however is freed up, and this will likely resemble more of a concierge role handling the guests. This instead of being bound to a computer at the front desk. In this thesis we have used the quantitative method and partially review in the work of analyzing the chains’ booking data and upcoming plans.
