Teaching with a focus on whole-class conversation is prominent in Norwegian schools and is visible in both research and the new curriculum. In order to create productive whole-class conversations, requirements are set for the teacher's leadership and follow-up in the mathematical discourse, for the students to achieve mathematical goals. Many researchers have studied teachers' patterns of action, and many have studied students' learning opportunities. This study focuses on how the teacher's pattern of action can help create opportunities to learn. The action pattern is studied through teacher actions, talk moves and follow-up questions. It is a qualitative case study. The study is based on analysis of whole-class conversations in three classes in the fourth grade, as well as students and teacher interviews. The results indicate that the teacher's action pattern can create opportunities to learn if the teacher invites the students to participate in mathematical whole-class discussions.
